This thread will summarize the locations that currently have Sprint's Xohm WiMax Coverage.
As soon as we have users reporting coverage, there will be updates to this thread. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier

Is the only way to determine if the towers can handle XOHM by browsing around with a XOHM device? Or is there something we can read from the tower using an EVDO card and debug views? _________________ --Larry |

Chicago, DC are next then Dallas, Philly, Boston. Most of these cities probably already have access in some spots, just not officially released.
Here's a post from evdoforums...
| xrayman wrote: | One of the first published Sprint-Clearwire coverage plans listed Baltimore, Washington DC and Chicago as the first cities to receive WiMax. With Baltimore to rollout first in September and later in 2008 Washington DC and Chicago are forecast to come on line. The old plan looks to be on course except for the lengthy delay from the forecast rollout date of early 2008.
Next cities on the list for 2008 were Boston, Providence, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Detroit, St. Louis, Kansas City, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego and Tampa. XOHM President Barry West announced only days ago that development is underway in Boston, Philadelphia and Dallas/Fort Worth. Clearwire has said it expects to launch mobile WiMax in Atlanta, Las Vegas, Portland, Oregon, and Grand Rapids, Michigan, by year's end.
With recent reports that the Sprint-Clearwire JV is on track to close later this year, I expect to see other cities on the 2008 list receiving WiMax in 2009.
The old list of cities for a 2009-2010 launch were: Madison, Milwaukee, Orlando, Cape Coral, West Palm Beach, Miami, Tucson, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Wichita, Lansing, Columbus, Virginia Beach and Toledo. I wonder what changes will be made to this list after the new Clearwire takes over? |

EVDO devices are 800/1900Mhz, Sprint WiMAX is 2.5Ghz. You basically need a 2.5Ghz WiMAX device of some form. |

I was hoping that there was some other identifying mechanism we could use that the tower broadcasts indicating what services it might offer or maybe indicate the last time they were serviced, etc.
I may just go ahead and order a XOHM modem to play with once I start working in Herndon, since someone mentioned a dslreports user claiming he is online with XOHM there. _________________ --Larry |

| ^And you can always return it. Just make sure you check into the return policy as it probably varies per retailer. |

| Anyone willing to check out Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati? It would be interesting to see if these are up (I have my doubts, but who knows?) |

Arrrrgh!!! Why the f*ck is Sprint putting cities such as Chicago, DC, Dallas, Philly, and Boston before a large major metropolitan city like Los Angeles? LA should have been the FIRST city to get WiMax! This city is on the cutting edge and dying to its hands on such technology.
I sincerely hope Sprint reconsiders the order of which cities they're going to rollout WiMax for, and that LA is on their soon to do list. I'm going to jump on it in a heartbeat!
I'm tired of high ping, laggy games online on my laptop |

Sprint also launched itīs PCS digital cell in the DC market 1995.

Response to the service has exceeded expectations, with more than 80,000 subscribers just six months after the launch... |

| I can only imagine how much more money is needed to cover an adequate area of Los Angeles. I think that the shear size of the city works against it for such projects. In the case of Baltimore and DC, you can reach areas with some of the highest per capita internet usage with a much smaller footprint. |

| While we're at it, Verizon launched it's first two EVDO test markets in 2003 in... you guessed it: Washington DC and San Diego. Los Angeles didn't come in until a year later. |

| Reportedly, Chicago was chosen due to the fact that it is the home of Motorola, which is the key vendor in their WiMax buildout. |

After hearing about the rush on XOHM gear in Baltimore, and "imminent" release in Boston, I went to the XOHM page, confirmed that my zip was on the list of future-support areas & ordered the hardware. Coverage is very strong around the U.Mass area, although I can't get past the XOHM signup page, and can't signup since I'm not in an active service area.
I have since heard that Boston won't be rolled out until sometime in '09. Waiting is taxing my patience, but the strong signal & speedy response of the parking page (basically identical to XOHM.COM but with some info on the connected device) hold promise that it will be worth the wait. |
