The folks at EVDOinfo have detected WiMAX in Chicago, using the Zyxcel Home Modem. Check out the image below - the LED indicators don't lie!

We put that WiMAX to the test today, on both that Zyxcel Home Modem and the ExpressCard.
Results were good, with the Home Modem WAY out-performing the ExpressCard. We got an average of 4.5Mbps down and 1.2Mbps up with the Zyxel and 3.1Mbps/0.8 on the ExpressCard.
Check out the details and screenshots here: 4Ginfo's First Speed Tests |

| Are they still planning on having coverage all the way up to rockford? I am like 25 miles east, and 10 miles north or so of Rockford, so I am really, really hoping I will be in the coverage area of this... |

Sounds like it's getting closer then. I live up in Harvard, IL, about 45 miles North Northwest of Hoffman estates.
Any idea when the initial Chicago launch is planned for? |

I live at downtown Chicago (River North). The USB device I ordered should be here tomorrow. I'm going to follow the loophole activation directions and see what happens and report it here.
For those who has gotten it to work, can I change the address to my real address after the activation is complete? I think the police station in Baltimore is going to get really pissed when it keeps on getting mail/bills for Xohm users who live outside of Baltimore. |

I did what you are going to do and all I can say is that the service is terrible. When it ran it was lightning fast but it was way to spotty. I am going to wait until the official Chicago release so I called Xohm and canceled for now. I talked to the CS rep and he said the reason its spotty is due to the fact they are testing and turn the towers on and off. Save yourself some cash and wait it out. I live right near Midway airport BTW. |

I just moved to a new apartment so I have no internet at all. I've been stealing my neighbor's wifi but the signal is so weak sometimes I can't get online all day. So between no internet and spotty internet, I'd choose latter. I don't really want to get DSL/cable broadband and then have to switch to Xohm in 2 months.
So did you change your address after you activate it or you have to keep a Baltimore address in your profile? |

hilarious. i can just picture them trying to figure out those bills.
in any case, i am in dallas and was able to change my address after establishing account. since that time, i've even had them ship me two different devices without issue.
good luck with service! |

| The Bmore address doesn't matter... Use a Bmore hotel then in the 21202 Zip code if you want... Nothing is sent as they just want to make sure your in coverage.. My address wasn't in coverage and I live in Bmore... I get great svc.. |

Activated a modem yesterday and consistently get 5Mbps/1Mbps or better on SW side of Chicago. Also tested at work in Burr Ridge with similar results. Download performance is consistent with speed tests. |

| I can now confirm that there is coverage in downtown Chicago (River North). Sometimes I can connect and sometimes I can't. But when I'm connected, it's fast. Thumbs up from me. |
