Verizon Wireless Selects Ericsson for LTE

Ericsson has been selected as one of two primary network vendors for the Long Term Evolution (LTE) network deployment for Verizon Wireless in the United States, Verizon Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Dick Lynch announced today during his keynote remarks at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Lynch announced that Ericsson and Alcatel Lucent were selected to build the infrastructure that will enable Verizon Wireless to become the first wireless company to offer commercial LTE-based service in the United States, starting in 2010.

“Verizon Wireless’ LTE network deployment will be driven by our vision of providing ubiquitous global wireless broadband connectivity and mobility,” said Lynch.

"This is a significant breakthrough for Ericsson in the wireless business in North America. It lays the foundation for continued growth as we approach the next decade," said Angel Ruiz, Head of Market Unit North America. "We're excited to work with Verizon to build their LTE business and are pleased with their decision to trust Ericsson with a vital part of the future of their business. Verizon is banking on our people and now it’s up to us to execute and deliver on that trust."

Ericsson has been working closely with Verizon Wireless on LTE since 2006, including the development of standards, early phase testing in Kista, Sweden and successful field trials in Minneapolis, MN.
