Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Portland and Seattle among Cities to Experience Turbo-Charged Mobile Broadband in 2009
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Mar. 25, 2009-- Sprint today announced the next markets in the national Sprint 4G roll out. Sprint, the first national carrier to test, launch and market 4G technology, is extending its 4G leadership by launching the next- generation service across the country. Sprint 4G offers turbo-charged mobile broadband – peak downlink speeds of up to 12 Mbps in Baltimore today and average downlink speeds of 2-4 Mbps – three to five times faster than today’s 3G service from any carrier.
Sprint plans to deploy Sprint 4G service in many markets in 2009, including:- Atlanta
- Honolulu
- Charlotte
- Las Vegas
- Chicago
- Philadelphia
- Dallas
- Portland
- Fort Worth
- Seattle
Sprint also expects to launch service in multiple markets in 2010 including Boston, Houston, New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
In addition to the ongoing market roll outs of 4G service across the country, Sprint has several new 4G devices planned for 2009 and 2010, including a single-mode 4G data card, embedded laptops, a small-office-home-office broadband modem and a tri-mode phone. Sprint was the first wireless carrier to offer access to both 3G and 4G networks on one device – the 3G/4G USB Modem U300.
Sprint made history by launching 4G in Baltimore in September 2008, then by launching the first dual-mode 3G/4G device in December. The current availability of Sprint 4G in Baltimore and the roll-out of 4G in major markets in 2009 and 2010 delivers on Sprint’s promise to offer a faster Internet experience in cities across the nation than any other wireless service from a national carrier.
“Sprint continues to lead the wireless industry by harnessing the power of WiMAX” said Todd Rowley, vice president of Sprint 4G. “The availability of Sprint 4G in more places this year and our aggressive expansion of Sprint 4G service demonstrates our commitment to provide 4G capabilities and devices nationwide for our business, consumer and government customers. These capabilities enable significantly enhanced performance and productivity for our customers.”
Sprint 4G brings the Internet to life and represents a shift in the way business, consumers and local governments will use mobile broadband, by extending the Internet beyond home or office use. Sprint 4G data cards, laptop solutions and phones will enable businesses and individuals to work when and where they want. Among the enhancements Sprint 4G enables are rich content, larger file transfers, streaming video and low-latency remote access. Sprint 4G-enabled smart phones have the promise of delivering processing power, applications and now the network connectivity to replace the laptop paradigm.
The 3G/4G USB Modem U300 is currently available nationwide via Sprint telesales at 1-800-Sprint-1 and at Sprint retail stores, Best Buy stores and local retailers in Baltimore. The device is priced at $79.99 with a $50 mail-in rebate (excludes taxes). With the U300, customers have access to the best of both 3G and 4G and can be ready to experience 4G when it arrives in their city, while taking advantage of America’s most dependable 3G network now. |

Sprint announced (again) this week that they will be launching several new markets in 2009 and 2010, following Clearwire's plans.
This year Sprint plans to add 4G service in Atlanta, Honolulu, Charlotte, Las Vegas, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Portland, Fort Worth, and Seattle; 2010 will bring Sprint 4G to Boston, Houston, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. A Sprint representative indicated that even more markets may be added in 2009 and 2010 but didn't elaborate on that.

Why should we believe a word they say? They're already 1.5 years late, and haven't had a single turn-up beyond Baltimore. I don't count Atlanta as that is Clear and still not quite official. "...may be added..." my foot. The only reason this came out is due to the recent announcements from Verizon and AT&T on the 3G/4G front. Sprint/Clear has lost all practical advantage they had over these competitors. |

I'll second the first part of that but the second part is way off. How have they given up "all practical advantage they had over these competitors" when AT&T's recent press release flurry is centered on them improving their already launched 3G network to a standard it should have had when it was released. I hate to say this but Clearwire might have it right by delaying release dates so the network infrustructure can handle some users. (Sidecutreports has an article on the recent press release with links to Giga-OM and the other tech reporter's reactions)
Maureen had it right, they should be concentrating on their 4G network!AT&T mentions that they won't be rolling out their LTE network until 2011 which if anything would re-establish the advantage for Clear that we all thought was long gone. |

Sprint has announced that Sprint 4G will be launching in Portland, Atlanta, and Las Vegas this August. This is no big surprise, as Clearwire already has service in those markets and Sprint uses Clearwire's network for their 4G, but very exciting progress nonetheless!

|
|
Got an email from a Clearwire employee stating Wi-Max is gonna hit Amarillo in August.
* Now, the note didn't state which YEAR, but I'm gonna hold out hope that it's 2009
* Amarillo has had Clearwire 1.0 for many years.
* AT&T 3G finally hit town a couple of months ago.
* Right after AT&T hit, I called Clearwire to get a cancellation quote. Was immediately transferred to 'retention', where they appeared to be somewhat in panic mode. Ended up keeping Clearwire(for now).
There's no way in hell this area's gonna be bleeding edge, so my read is that AT&T is gobbling up Clearwire customers and Clearwire is in defensive mode, so probably moved Amarillo up on the list.
* 'bout time SOMETHING/SOMEONE comes to town. Prior to AT&T, there was NO portable web service that was any good. No VZ down here, Sprint sucked, Clearwire was iffy/spotty.
Be interesting to see if/when it really happens.
If not, Clearwire will get wiped out by AT&T... |

Update on Amarillo service:
Local TV news just had a blurb about wi-max being available starting this coming Saturday, August 1st (!)
Guess the competitive pressure got too hot and they had to respond.
Surprising, in that this place is the last to get anything...
Depending upon upgrade terms, I may or may not do something near term.
If so, I'll report back. |

By the end of the year Sprint 4g cities to include:
Baltimore, MD
Portland, OR
Las Vegas, NV
Atlanta, GA
Bellingham, WA
Boise, IA
West Texas, TX
Milledgeville, GA
Salem, NC
Chicago, IL
Philadelphia, PA
Dallas/FT. Worth, TX
Raleigh, NC
Greensboro, NC
Charlotte, NC
San Antonio, TX
Austin, TX
http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/01/leaked-sprint-wimax-roadmap-names-new-cities-for-2009-rollout/
It will be interesting to see if Sprint continues to lag behind Clearwire on launch dates for specific cities. It looks like it probably won't be by much more than a month if they do since cities like Boise are supposed to be officially launched Sept 1st, giving Sprint about a month to go live there in order to make their 3Q launch date.
http://www.sidecutreports.com/2009/08/03/clearwire-10-new-markets-officially-live-sept-1/
Also, it is encouraging to see the strategy being deployed by Clearwire. Hitting medium sized cities on both coasts so media can check the systems out and have positive reviews since they don't too many subscribers slowing the network down. And then following that up with a series of larger cities and their nearby towns/cities to allow some business people and regional sales reps to actually take advantage of the mobility aspect. (Ex. Texas, North Carolina/Georgia) |

I wonder if ignoring Los Angeles is a deliberate move on their part |
