Speed, range, open architecture, ip based, mimo...where do you want us to start? That's not even getting into how the companies are running their networks (ex. AT&T's lack of adequate backhaul in some markets to support the 3G iphone boom)
For a really basic explanation to a user its like a wifi N connection with better security and the range and user mobility of a cell tower. |

Umm... First of all you should understand the different communication technologies within the wireless world.
In 3G/2G, there are two main competing technologies. GSM and CDMA.
GSM, (Global System for Mobile communications) originating from Europe. It is the world standard, at 80% mobile cellular comunications market usage (claimed by the GSM association) And, what makes it more popular to the traveling consumer, is that, along being the world standard, it uses a SIM (subscriber identity module) card. Which is switchable, from phone to phone. But that's not what's "cool" about it. You can take an unlocked phone with you, (lets say, from the UK) and I was traveling to Austrailia to visit a friend. Well, no one in their right mind would use their domestic carriers' phone/plan. (The international charges would be outrageous!) So people decide to get a cheap, pre-paid phone from the visited country, or buy an unlocked phone like I have (Moto RAZR2 v9) and just pop in/out your personal, and traveling cards.
Well, that's enough about GSM. On to 3G CDMA. CDMA, developed by American compony Qualcomm. CDMA is used in the United States, Canada, Eastern Asia, (South Korea, China, Japan, and some of Latin America. It does not have an interchangable chip. Though China, has been using a version of CDMA that is equevalent to a SIM card (CDMA Rev. B, I think?). But it was never brought to Sprint (or Verizon) do to their plans to expand to 4G for their faster speeds. [/u] |

Hi Everybody!
I wonder can somebody explain me what kind of investments 4G implementation require?
Can the same wireless equipment be used? Does it need to be mixed with broadband?
Please, bear in mind when I say 4G I don't mean Wimax or LTE.
(please, don't argue on that - it's just the question of naming..)
When I say 4G I mean the technology which should come live in 2011/2012 or something.
Brgds,
