I'm waiting for my Clear WiMax usb modem. Has anyone out there used one in the Seattle area? What are your thoughts and experience with browsing? Does it work well in your house? Please post any reviews.

Thanks

I had a 3g modem connected to a Cradlepoint MBR-1100 router. Just got the U300, and after having some problems getting it activated, have it up and running.

I'm getting at least double the speeds according to speedtest.net, and from my other tests using various tools, it may be even faster than that. Peak download speeds I've seen is about 5Mb/s. Uploads still are pretty slow - between 0.5Mb and 1Mb/s.

Still, a lot better than before.

I've noticed it takes FOREVER for the thing to connect initially, though.

I'm on Vashon Island facing Des Moines near the Pt. Robinson Lighthouse. Likely getting my coverage from towers nearby on the hill, and from across the water.

I was with Clearwire for 2+ years and recently got the new modem for their 4G system. Initially it barely made the advertised 3Mbps download rate. I went to speedguide.net and downloaded TCPoptimizer.exe and ran it on my XP machine. What a difference! I used speakeasy.com/speedtest before and after the optimizer. Speed went from an average of 2.9 to 5.1 download. Upload went from 440 to 500. My download has hit as high as 7.4 late at night when traffic is light.

I am very pleased with this FREE upgrade to 4G. I am located east of Lake City on the Sand Point Way ridge. I consistently get 4-5 lights for signal level, just like I did with the older modem. Be sure to tweak your MTU setting on your router (if you use one) to 1500 as many default to 1400 and slow you down. I have a Linksys WRT54GL and it works very well. My network is: 2 laptops, 1 desktop, 2 Tivos and a Callcentric ATA box for internet phone service. BTW, Callcentric is fantastic for $3 a month.

I just got the H version of the 4G modem this afternoon. I live in North City and took it with me to the Richmond Beach library and the best I was doing was 75 kbps, so I did the chat option thing /w clear, as the username from the bill would not work minimally.

Got a temp PW and the username to function but still couldn't get any speed. On the trip home to North City tried it again, still not decent speed. I usually use firefox, and was doing the wimax and slow clear together, thinking I would need to cancel my service now that I am at home with no speed. The CS tech indicated something about signing a user agreement, but that never did a pop-up until I opened the Chrome browser and signed all the agreements and viola without tweeking I am getting 4.3 megbps dl's and 1 meg ups...where I am my DSL gets only about 1.2-.5 mbps typically.

I tried to do a contract but it wasn't allowed. I bowed out of a Sprint data contract before 30 days were up about 2 years or so ago, and that might be the reason.
So I am month to month but it looks like I will be getting "one-month_free" perhaps two 25$ credits, so beside purchasing the modem I had to pay the activation fee of $35
