I have a Franklin U300 modem running in the Kansas City area in 3G (no Sprint 4G service here yet) and I'm suffering from severe issues with it overheating. It gets very hot and the performance (latency and download/upload speeds) are awful when it gets hot. I know I have signal, I've used an S720 and a 598U in the same place before. I'm using it in a Cradlepoint MBR-1000 that I purchased from 3GStore (which in the past has given me excellent customer service), but I don't know if they'll support me since the card (which was purchased directly from Sprint) has the same behavior in a laptop. I had one card that got so hot that the plastic warped, and Sprint replaced it for free. However, that doesn't seem to have resolved anything, as the new one has the same problem. Do you have any ideas about what could be causing this and how I might be able to resolve it? I'm curious whether it's a hardware problem with my device or all devices. If you have U300 experience, please tell me if this is abnormal.
There is another on the Sprint forums detailing an identical problem here:

Yeah, I've heard the U300 and the U301 do get very warm? I have a Sprint Overdrive and while it's charging it do get hot.
Here's what I did (I also have a DIY water cooled quad core Q6600, nVIDIA 8600 vga desktop). I have a Sprint Overdrive. I built a VERY SMALL cooling shroud to go around it (made of plastic, doesn't suck up that much desk space). I spliced a 120mm medium Yate Loon fan to a 12v output brick (step down transformer) and away I go. 'Course it does take a lot of the portability out of the lappy, but I use 120v lap coolers for all my laptops anyway. I try to stay at least 50' from an electrical plug 'cause my extension cord is only 50' and I ain't too hot on the USB fans I can connect all three lappys and, after adding a USB receiver to the desktop, even it , all at once with no problemos. (IBM Thinkpad PM, M465-E C2D, D610 PM, Q6600 water cooled desktop) |
