Since Verizon Wireless announced that they would be using LTE technology for their 4G network back in 2008, they have been claiming that their superior 4G network would be launching in the near future. While we were expecting Verizon to publicly launch their 4G network in 2009, they had only started to perform closed LTE trials in Boston and Seattle.

Recently Verizon announced that they would publicly launch 4G by the end of 2010, but didn't provide any specific details on exactly when or which markets would be the first to have Verizon 4G.

"In the fourth quarter, we'll be turning on [commercial] markets as planned," Verizon Communications CTO Richard Lynch told Sidecut Reports. Verizon also plans to have several user trials this summer before making the service available to the general public. They also indicated that they plan to launch 25-30 commercial markets by the end of this year. Sprint/CLEAR's WiMax 4G network has had a big head start on 4G network coverage for awhile now, as they currently cover 27 markets and plan to introduce more this year. It's interesting to see that by the end of the year Verizon claims they will cover as many markets as WiMax currently covers. Looks like LTE will be catching up in the 4G race very quickly!

I'm predicting that Verizon will quickly take the lead in having more 4G coverage. I'm thinking that one of the reasons it's taken them so long to actually launch the service is that they have been ensuring they will have enough bandwidth available to each tower to provide the level of service that we have come to expect from Verizon's network.

I'm sure Verizon doesn't want to launch the service until they are near the point where they will be able to claim that they have more 4G coverage than any other network. As they pride themselves in being the network with the most coverage anywhere, including 3G coverage.

Will be interesting to see how Verizon prices LTE. Word is, it will be per byte usage. Sprint/Clear currently have an unlimited option at a reasonable rate that can step down to EVDO. I wonder if Verizon LTE devices will easily step down to EVDO.

Sound like no LTE phones until at least 2011, data cards only. Sprint WiMAX phones coming this summer.

The interwebs are reporting that Verizon revealed that LTE is coming to "30 NFL Cities" on 11/15. Here's hoping that Detroit is one of those markets, and that I'm in range.

I love my Sprint EVO 4G phone, but the first one to get 4G to my house gets my home business, assuming acceptable plan limits, since none of the wired providers will build.

Tomorrow is apparently the big reveal. Verizon has a press conference scheduled for 11:30 EDT.
