I have an Evo 4G in Los Angeles, and have gotten a 4G signal in the downtown area, and along the Wilshire and Santa Monica Blvd corridors. Transfer rates are not very impressive (2500-3500 downloads) and latency (130ms and up) is about double that of Verizon's 3G service in the same areas.

Is there any word on when 4G is to be rolled out "officially" in Los Angeles and can I expect the performance to improve when it is officially launched?

Other EVO users have been reporting the same thing and we actually just posted an article about the news! We don't have any specific dates when it will be official, however, this is a good sign that 4G is on its way to the LA area.

I had 4G since EVO launch day and was able to use it up until last week when it suddenly stopped working. I still get a signal but it doesn't connect. While it was working it did work marvelously. I typically got between 5-10 down and 1 up. I also had a great signal using it indoors in my house. I live about 90 miles east of San Francisco and 70 miles south of Sacramento.

one of our testers tried connecting to 4G in Los Angeles.... and it worked!

Signal wasn't great (our tester was only able to get two out of four signal bars maximum) and speeds weren't nearly as impressive as we've seen in cities that have officially launched the service, but Sprint and CLEAR are obviously working on launching service in the area!
