High-desert in California Phelan, Victorville,Hisperia, etc.
I am hope for it some time this year for 4g because I can't wait to get off of Dial-up. I am in a area that is considered rural so there is no broadband available |

Hi, Markitzero.
I don't know if you checked but nearly every major carrier has 3G or better service in the Victorville, CA area which is many times better then Dial up. All of the carriers have good coverage of the area even a fair distance from Victorville. Even if you were out in the boonies, 3Gstore.com does have a nice selection of amps and booster devices to improve weak cell signals.
I checked on the sites of the following carriers and they all have the following in your area:
Sprint - 3G EVDO service 0.6 - 1.4 Mbps (plus if you visit the San Bernardino and Los Angeles areas, you could get a 3G/4G device to use there and be future ready when WiMAX does come to town).
Verizon - 3G EVDO service 0.6 - 1.4 Mbps (again, you could get a 3G/4G LTE device and can use it when travelling in the S.B./L.A. area plus be future ready).
AT&T - 3G UMTS/HSPA service - 3.6 Mbps or 7.2 Mbps, don't know what AT&T's max speed is in that area, their map shows 3G is available. (again, get a LTE ready device and be future ready plus can use 4G when you visit other areas).
T-Mobile - 3.5G UMTS/HSPA+ shown as fast web service (or 4G as they call it). The L.A. area has their even faster service if you visit San Bernardino and L.A.
But I know where you are coming from. I lived in Cave Junction, Oregon and lived with Dial Up for years. If it wasn't for the lack of 3G coverage in the area or the higher cost at the time, I would have it had much sooner. Verizon has 3G EVDO service there now and if my parents (who are living there now) didn't have DSL from Frontier (local telco), My Dad probably would have a 3G modem and a 3G router in use now. Their Ranch is about 5 miles from town and amazing to me, Frontier has DSL out there now, as does my sister who also is over 5 miles from the nearest Central Office.
I gather that is not likely to happen in your area any time soon.
But knowing how frustrating Dial Up can be, I would dump it ASAP and get 3G service from one of the carriers above (and if possible, get a 3G/4G device and be future ready).
Also, if you are in the market for a new smart phone with WiFi personal hotspot capability, you can use it on the road as a phone and as a WiFi router/access point at home and on the road. Carriers like Verizon charge $30 a month for that feature on top of the phone's data plan. A cheaper alternative to getting a separate dedicated hotspot device or USB modem.
I hope I was not too long winded on this subject, but I hope it helps you and others who live in rural areas wanting faster internet service. _________________ GreatOnePDX |
